Yes two protagonist. Why wouldn't you be able to have multiple protagonists? I've read some books with multiple protagonists. I remember three I read a long time ago. They were called, Surrender, Crooked, and About a Boy by Nick Hornby, I don't remember the authors of the other two.

I said the because that is the proper way to address it. You are doing a play on words, misinterpreting it in a way like there's only one. If I said, "I am eating peas in a can", it could mean two things. Either I am eating peas which are inside of a can, or, I am eating peas while inside a can.

Halo Reach is the next Halo, not a spin off.

DMC4, Dante was not the protagonist, Nero was.

MGS2 and MGS3 are not spin offs.

That was a dual mistake. I took it as if you were saying Dante was the ONLY one.
Nero did play a bigger role however.

MGS2 and MGS3 do follow the main plot. They are just different point in time. MGS3 is basically the beginning of what will lead to the events of solid snake. MGS2 was also part of the main plot. Even MGS portable ops along with peacwalker which are PSP games are part of the main plot.

A side story would be using one of the characters as part of something not involving with the main plot. Every even shapes the story which all comes together in MGS4.
