Comparison of Game engines PART 1
This is the first of many I'm going to make.
The first on my list is the comparison of GT5 (based on pre-launch knowledge) and Forza Motorsport 3.
First off, let's compare the basic building blocks of a game's visuals: the native resolution framebuffer. Forza Motorsport 3 demonstrates a native resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels. It uses 2xMSAA (Anti-Aliasing) for ingame visuals and 4xMSAA for menus/replays. So far the GT5 demos have demonstrated 2 native modes: a 1280 X 720 mode with 4xMSAA and a 1280 X 1080 mode with 2xMSAA. Both can be hardware scaled to 1080p.
Both games run 60 FPS (Frames Per Second). Though Forza 3 seems to be locked at 60 FPS more often than the GT5 demos. GT5 tends to dip into the 50s quite often (52 was the minimum according to Digital Foundry on the Time Trial), but the human eye can't see such a insignificant drop in FPS. Both games drop to 30 FPS during replays.
Forza 3 tends to have higher texture quality on the road and environements, and it's engine creates huge and high polygon draw distances. GT5 also has beautiful environments, but the resources were largely used on it's car models. The environments in GT5 will also have weather effects such as wind (and in some videos you can see the grass/leaves of the trees being effected).
The average car model in Forza 3 has about 200-300k polygons ingame, and about 1 million during menu's. GT5's cars are split into 2 categories, premium and standard. According to Polyphony Digital the standard cars uses the same texture resolution and shaders as the premium cars, but the difference is mainly in the polygon count. The premium models have an average 500k (by the way each "k" stands for a thousand) polygons. The standard cars are a mystery but if they are "upscaled" from GT4 then I'm expecting it to be around 4k-5k polygons per standard car like GT4. In Forza 3 there can be as many as 8 cars on the track, on GT5 there can be 16 cars...though it's not confirmed if you can put 16 premium cars on the track since most of the videos show 8.
Both games use tremondous amounts of HDR lighting. HDR lighting stands for "high dynamic range" lighting. In both games it is used heavily especially in the interiors of the cars.
That's it.

Easy. "Gran Turismo 5". There is nothing more to discuss.

Who cares? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that "Gran Turismo 5" will look surperior >_>
If you want me to have a serious discussion then move into a different topic.

Dude, you are like this forum's Kendo.
I just stated who would care. And I just said now people can know exactly why GT5 looks better than Forza 3 to them.

Re: Comparison of Game engines PART 1
Well I find this quite interesting.
Game developers would usually stick to one kind of engine and just continue with it till theres a updated version. Like how Epic Games like using the Unreal engine.

Re: Comparison of Game engines PART 1
Great Topic
GT5 obviously looks 100x better because it came out 1 year later. But lets be honest Alan_1994 Forza 4 won't be able to beat GT5. Also GT5 can everything in 3D with PSeye Head Tracking, with an amazing frame rate, 1080p resolution (I think it can do 3D and 1080p correct me if I'm wrong), and breathtaking wheather effects

Cool, a couple things wrong with that post though..
-I never said anything about Forza 4.
-GT5 doesn't look 100x better, but I know you were exagerrating.
-GT5 is 3D capable, but it runs in sub-1080p and has to be upscaled to achieve full 1080p.
-I read on GT planet that the head tracking is garbo..
But on the topic of Forza 4....There was a huge improvement in graphics from Forza 2 to Forza 3. I'm not saying we can expect the same leap, but they never said they maxed out the X360 while Polyphony actually said that they completely drained the PS3's resources. I think Forza 4 will atleast be on par in a technical standpoint...but both games have their signature artstyles and looks. Forza tends to look more colorful and crisp, GT tends to look more authentic. We will see next year what Turn 10 has to offer, but for now lets hold the speculation.

Re: Comparison of Game engines PART 1
I highly doubt "Forza Motorsport 4" will look up to par with "Gran Turismo 5" in terms of graphics. But I will say that it is possible for "Forza Motorsport 4" to look better then the previous titles on Xbox 360.
