Why do you say you have to keep up with it? The DS-DS lite-DSI aren't successors, they are minor modifications. It's like saying every time a new PS3 is released, you cant keep up with it.

Ds's are priced as a new handheld, so negated.

But, you're don't have to get every new version. If they all play the same games, no need to catch up.
The 3DS is the real successor of the DS.
But anyways, back on topic.
