Backwards compatibility has been at or near the top of the wishlist for PS3 owners after the hardware-based backwards-compatible 60GB and 20GB PS3s were phased out, and the original models began to succumb to the problems of age. Software-based backwards compatibility was available for a time, but this was removed in the 40GB model, and has not made an appearance since.

Now comes a sign, in the form of a patent filed by Sony Japan, that Sony could be quite close to working out the answer, using an adaptor and an external device. This device has all manner of internal components, including a processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, sound processor, and graphic processor. Sounds a lot like a PS2 to me.
